Greece Is The Word

Greece has given me the most amazing experience recently and without being too dramatic, has banished my stress and 'got me nicely sorted'.

Now at this point, I must clarify that I have not received some form of divine redemption whilst watching a musical involving Sandy Olsson, Danny Zuko and the pupils of Rydell High - on the contrary, I am referring to the uplifting effects of a trip to the ancient city of Athens.

The deadline had been approaching for me to complete a contract that could easily reverse the recent downturn in my fortunes. Unfortunately, as is often the case in these situations, my progress had been halted by some sort of mental block. Perhaps this was due in some part to the memory of the last meeting with my bank manager. I recalled how he had reminded me that the idea of banking, was that I was meant to bank with him, not vice versa!

I decided that I must get away, get matters into perspective so that I could start anew. With this in mind I found myself looking at a short break website that could help me out. I just needed about 3 days away.and I had a limited budgetbut I wanted a decent hotellets see..BINGO!

And so it was, that a day later, I was checking into my hotel in Athens. I had managed to get the Evripides Hotel in the centre of town. It was a tourist class hotel, but for the price, it had everything I would need, it was a great base to explore the city from but most of all, I had a great view of the Acropolis and Lycabettos Hill from my room.

The first order of the day was breakfast and then onwards and upwards.

And upwards was right..my first stop was to visit Lycabettos Hill. Lycabettos Hill is a huge 910 foot limestone hill that dominates Athens, and I was taking a cable car to the very top.

The view from the summit was breathtaking. The whole of Athens was laid out before me and the whispering wind gave a sense of loneliness and seclusion. I felt drawn to the 19th century chapel of St George, and after some time spent in contemplation within, walked across to the quaint caf. I had a cool beer and watched the sun set it was indescribable. A whole day had passed on this magical hill and I felt at one with the world.

The following day saw me going up another hill, but this time I was walking to the top. I was walking up the Acropolis to see the Parthenon. The actual walk upwards is nice in itself and there are a couple of cafes and souvenir shops along the route. At the summit I found my prize, the immortal Parthenon, the great temple to the goddess Athena. Once again all sense of normal time deserted me and before I realised it, the sunset was upon me.

Back in England, I realised that something had changed and that I felt renewed and ready to face life again. There was no doubt in my mind that everyone needs to get away occasionally and I thanked my good fortune at having found that website.

Pondering further, I thought to myself that for the final word in short breaks.. Greece is the word.
